Lisa from the Library

This term we had a visit from Lisa, the librarian. She read a Margaret Mahy story to Room 1 and Room 2.

We looked to see what was behind the chair.

We threw feathers up in the air and tried to catch them.

We enjoy your visits, Lisa. Thank you.

Penguins

With what we discovered about keeping warm, we designed a penguin with things we thought would keep them warm.

How do animals keep warm?

We joined with Room 1 to see what effect blubber could have on animals in cold places.
We put some iced water in some bowls. Then we made two sets of gloves. One was just one plastic bag. The other was made from two plastic bags with lard between the bags.
Next we put our hand in the single bag and put it in the bowl of iced water.

"It's freezing," said Ethan.

Then we put our hand in the bag with the lard. "It's warm," said Ethan.

Himanot tried the same.....

"It is still warm," said Himanot.

We thought that the water might have warmed up so we tried with just the single plastic bag again. It was still freezing.

Keeping Warm

We are looking at how thing keep warm. We put some hot water in some different sized containers and took their temperature over about 15 minutes.

We wondered about Goldilocks and the types of bowls the bears used and why the porridge in the different bowls was a different temperature.

The Sun and shadows

We have been watching what the sun does in the morning.

We also looked at the netball post shadow on the ground.

This was just after morning tea.

We looked again after lunch.

It looked as if the sun was moving. Gianni said that it was because the earth was spinning.
What do you think?

Paper Sculpture

We have been working together with Room 1 to create some paper sculptures.

We drew a circle for the face then made hair, goggly eyes and eyebrows by folding or curling strips of paper.
